What causes depression?
People can be diagnosed with depression for a variety of reasons, and it has many different triggers. Additionally, depression has different severities.
Mild depression may involve experiencing occasional episodes of low mood and decreased interest, which may not significantly impact daily functioning.
Moderate depression often involves more persistent feelings of sadness, loss of interest, and challenges in carrying out daily activities.
Severe depression, on the other hand, can be profoundly debilitating, causing intense feelings of despair, hopelessness, and a significant disruption in one’s ability to function socially, occupationally, and personally.
Understanding the varying severities of depression is crucial in determining appropriate treatment approaches and providing the necessary support for individuals experiencing this condition.
Stressful events
When stressful events occur, such as bereavement, relationship breakdown, or financial issues, your risk of becoming depressed increases.
Biological factors
You are at a greater risk of depression if the frontal lobe of your brain is less active. Also, you are more likely to have depression if you have inherited certain personality traits from your parents, such as low self-esteem.
Family history
Loneliness
If you live alone due to the loss of a partner or being cut off from your family, you are more at risk of depression.
Substance abuse
If you drink too much alcohol or take drugs, you are more likely to develop depression. This is because alcohol and drugs affect the balance of chemicals in the brain, which increases the risk of depression.
Chronic illness
You may have a higher risk of depression if you are battling a chronic or life-threatening medical condition, such as cancer or Parkinson’s Disease.
Postnatal depression
Some new mothers, fathers or partners are particularly vulnerable to depression after the birth of the child. This is clinically known as postnatal depression and is usually caused by hormonal and physical changes and the added responsibility of childbirth.
Mood disorders
If you have been diagnosed with another mood disorder, such as bipolar disorder or seasonal affective disorder (SAD), you will probably have depression symptoms.
What to expect from a depression hypnotherapy session?
In your first hypnotherapy session, your hypnotherapist will begin by explaining how hypnosis works. After that, you’ll have a conversation to establish what you think might be causing your depression and agree on the methods that your hypnotherapist will use.
Then, the hypnotherapist may:
- Use guided relaxation techniques to help you achieve hypnosis
- Use your agreed method to help you achieve your goal. For example, helping you discover what is triggering your depression
- To conclude the session, your hypnotherapist will gradually bring you out of your trance-like state
Will hypnotherapy cure my depression?
Hypnosis can be an effective, efficient, and accessible form of treatment if you want to cure your depression. However, hypnosis is not the right form of treatment for everyone. For example, if you are not open to hypnosis, you will not achieve a trance-like state. Also, for some serious mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, hypnosis can have detrimental effects as it can create false memories.
