Many people in Sheffield have a fear of the dentist - Do you?

  • Do you spend time and energy creating unpleasant imaginary scenes of going to the dentist?
  • Do you go back to unpleasant past experiences (that might have happened decades ago)?
  • Do you vividly hear The Drill in your imagination or smell the smell of the dentist's surgery?

"We tend to get better at the things we practice and you have been practising being afraid"

if you have a dentist phobia hypnotherapy could help

Does the phobia you had cause you to feel nervous? Scared? Anxious? Some people can't stand even the thought of going near the dentist's. Other people break out in a cold sweat when they smell that dentist smell. Some people crumble when they even think about The Drill.

If you are looking into how to resolve your dental phobia then you are in the right place.

Some people take a trip to the dentist all in their stride and have no problems at all.

Why do some people do anything they can to avoid the dentist while others are really relaxed about it?

In our experience problems with going to the dentist are for two main reasons...

  1. As a child they had some work done which wasn't pleasant and that reaction has stuck with them until now
  2. Your parents had a problem with the dentist and you learned to be just as afraid as them

How hypnotherapy could help you go to the dentist

A dental phobia is not a weird phobia and is certainly not the weirdest phobia in the world, in fact it is very common. If you have a fear of the dentist then chances are you rehearse a worst case scenario over and over in your mind.

There are various websites that might advise you to go to a dental sedation clinic so you can be knocked out for a dentist to work on your teeth. This seems rather drastic, especially when there are natural and effective alternatives available.

Is it time to rehearse being confident, calm and in control?

Hypnotherapy could help you to make this change.

When my husband was training to become a hypnotherapist all those years ago he used me as his number one practice subject. I found it all very relaxing. However the most profound thing that Rich helped me with was my abject fear of the dentist and needles in general. Within about 2 sessions I had completely over come this fear and was able to go to the dentist happily and any time I had an injection was a complete breeze.read more

I sought help from Richard with regard to anxiety and depression. I was looking for help to clear the 'chatter' in my mind so that I can more easily focus and make progress towards goals that are important to me. I found the deep mindfulness I gained from the sessions helped to clear my mind and give me tools that I can use in everyday situations. I am more able to calm myself for work presentations and better focus on what is needed for my family.I feel like I have tapped into the core of who I am and can now channel my inner energy for postive outcomes for me.The recordings of the sessions were great in helping me continue my practice after my sessions with Richard and his nuturing and assertive style made me feel very comfortable and at ease.read more

Of Course You Can Enjoy Going To The Dentists!

The thing with going to the dentist is that sooner or later there will HAVE to be some kind of dental work done on your teeth. You have a choice. Do you take control of the situation and go before it's a big problem or put it off until you need an NHS emergency dentist?

Regardless of how you find yourself in the place you are now it is reassuring to know that dental practices have improved. Techniques have moved on and advanced and many procedures are now quick, painless and effective. But many people still have that fear.

Hypnotherapy can be a great way to relax, to maintain your calm state of mind and even to manage pain (if there even is any). We have worked with people who have been in dire need of work being done on their teeth but they were afraid of the needles used to numb the mouth and without that the work couldn't go ahead.

Other people have been so nervous that they have to be sedated for the dentist to be able to get close to their teeth.

Beating your dental phobia is a group effort

When you get several different elements of your life working together and with positive effect it can make things seem very easy. The exact opposite happens when it feels like things just aren't working right.

When you get your thoughts under control that is a huge step forwards. As a result of working with a professional hypnotherapist this change is possible. Another element to fix could be your dentist. Your dentist may be great but maybe they aren't. Look at all the variables that could be having an impact and change the ones that need changing.

If this is the case you will probably want to find a dentist near you who is sympathetic and patient. You might be thinking to yourself "but how do I find dentist in my area who understands me?"

We would highly recommend doing a bit of research on line. There are dental clinics that specialise in working with people who used to be afraid of dentists. There are even some dentists who use hypnotherapy to help their patients.

Find a dentist near you who you are happy with and feel comfortable with and it will further amplify the changes that hypnotherapy could bring about.
