Beat Your Fear Of Driving On Motorways

motorway driving confidence hypnotherapyThe fear of driving on motorways is actually surprisingly common. I was prompted to write this post today after another enquiry from someone wondering if hypnosis for driving anxiety could help.

The short answer is YES….hypnosis CAN help! You are not the only one with this fear, I promise.

I also promise that it is possible to change how you think and feel about driving.

The fear of driving on motorways or at speed is so common, in my opinion, because we are not trained to drive on motorways. This fact pickles my brain if I’m honest! Motorways are the arteries for the country and having them flowing smoothly is essential.

The support that I offer to people struggling to drive on motorways helps them to be calm and confident on the motorways. As a result, they are more aware of what is going on around them which helps them to be a safer driver.

“I took 5 tests about 25 years ago, everyone thought I’d pass first time – I didn’t and each time I was more and more stressed when the examiner got in the car. I give it up as a bad job.

I went to Richard Hennessy. Age 50 I passed. I am confident, relaxed driver in all weathers in heavy traffic and motorways.”

Is A Fear Of Driving On Motorways Common?

Yes, it is but for some reason, it is not discussed often. It seems to be one of those secret phobias that people are unwilling to openly admit to. Perhaps because driving is seen as one of those standard life skills for many people. Admitting you have a fear of it is to state that you aren’t fully capable as an adult.

Lots of people avoid motorways but will come up with ingenious dodges and workarounds to keep their secret safe. I have seen someone who was put in a position whereby they couldn’t avoid giving a work colleague a lift to a conference. Rather than admit she was unhappy driving on motorways she faked illness and had a day off just to avoid an awkward situation.

How far do you go out of your way to avoid motorway driving?

The AA has estimated that in just one year UK drivers drive 66 million miles just to avoid motorways! Some of those miles will be people wanting to avoid congestion but many will be people who are simply unwilling to drive on Motorways.

Why Am I So Afraid Of Driving On Motorways?

There could be any number of explanations as to how you got to the point where you are considering hypnotherapy to address your fear of driving on motorways.

  • Perhaps you were involved in an accident on a motorway
  • Perhaps you accidentally drove onto a motorway and the stress and anxiety stayed with you
  • Maybe one of your parents had the same fear and you learned from a young age that motorways are scary.

I have seen clients who have told me this is how their fear of driving on motorways began. To be perfectly honest though I don’t care! The reasons for you being in the position you are don’t really matter to me. At the end of the day they are more like excuses than reasons.

The main reason you have been having difficulty driving on motorways until now is because you keep doing what you have been doing. Hypnotherapy in Sheffield with me could help you identify a better alternative.

What can hypnosis do to help you beat your driving phobia?

Hypnotherapy could be a great tool for you to change how you feel about driving on motorways. For many people, anxiety and stress play a big role in their fear. Practising feeling unhappy or unwell about the idea of driving creates an association between the two making it familiar. Hypnosis can help you become more familiar with calm control rather than stress and anxiety.

Hypnosis could help you boost your confidence in your abilities. Have you got something that you are comfortable and happy doing? Well, lets take that feeling and apply it to driving and practise feeling that calm way while driving in your imagination. Make THAT familiar and you are on the path to success.

What you say to yourself and about yourself has power

Are your thoughts intrusive? Do the things you say to or about yourself (either out loud or in your head) have a critical or even abusive aspect? Hypnosis can help you regain control of these unhelpful thoughts and replace them with something more supportive and encouraging.

You get more of what you think so maybe it is time to think about how good it will be to be in control of your vehicle!
