Surely they’re both pretty much the same?

No. They aren’t.

As a hypnotherapist I spend my days talking to clients. I talk to them to help them become very relaxed and comfortable and I talk to them about the types of changes they can make and how they can make them.

Words Are Just Words And Don’t Mean That Much…Don’t They?

I have to be a cunning linguist at times to help people overcome blockages in thought and feeling and to enable people to see things in a different way to facilitate change. Words are my bread and butter.

As a result I can be a little nit-picky about some words and their useage because all words are an outward expression of internal thoughts or feelings. The words you use to and about yourself say as much to you as they do to other people. In the last few weeks I have seen a number of examples of people using the word “thin” when what they actually wanted was to become “slim”.

An Expression Of Concern Or a Compliment?

Perhaps you are following me so far, maybe not, let me try and clarify what I mean by giving you an example. Imagine two women meet up. They are friends but haven’t seen each other for six months. One woman says to the other “Wow, you look thin.” When you read that did you read it as a compliment or an expression of concern?

I just looked up a definition of “thin” and found words like sparse, lacking, having little flesh and scant all associated in one way or other with the word thin.

Now imagine that first woman said to her friend “Wow, you look slim.” Does that sound like a compliment? I think it does. It sounds encouraging and supportive rather than concerned or worried.

I Won’t “Make You Thin”

The problem is that the word “thin” keeps cropping up. Paul McKenna has a book called “I can make you thin” and a fellow hypnotherapist in Sheffield had a magazine advert saying that he could help you become thin.

This is a dangerous use of the word and if you want to become “thin” maybe you should have a think if you mean thin or slim. A seemingly small thing like changing a word could have a big impact. I have seen it happen many times.

Being slim implies being smaller but healthy. Being thin implies being beyond healthy slimness and into unhealthy territory.

Do you want to be slim or thin?

If you would like some help becoming slimmer then hypnotherapy with me could help. If you want to become thin then I am not the right hypnotherapist for you and maybe you should try Paul McKenna or the other hypnotherapist on Woodseats!

High blood pressure or hypertension as it is medically known is known as the ‘silent killer’ because people with high blood pressure rarely know they have it. This does not mean that just because they have know knowledge of the problem that it isn’t doing them harm.

High blood pressure is a major contributing factor in heart attacks and strokes. As a general rule the higher your blood pressure is the higher your chance of a significant cardiac event like a stroke. 30% of adults and 50% of those over 65 years of age in the UK have high blood pressure and of those 90% of those people have no medical cause for the problem.

This type of high blood pressure is called “essential hypertension“.

What this means is that most people with high blood pressure need to change their lifestyle and they can almost always find their blood pressure will decrease. The great news is that hypnotherapy is an ideal tool to tackle most if not all of the causes of non-medical hypertension.

Half Price Consultation For Anyone With Hypertension

To mark World Hypertension Day Focused Hypnosis are offering a hypertension consultation at half price, that is just £35. During this session you could get a deeper insight into how you could change your lifestyle factors which could increase your chances of reducing your blood pressure in a safe and natural way.

What issues can hypnotherapy address that could reduce blood pressure?

Hypertension factors hypnotherapy can address:

Being over weight

Smoking

Stress

Excessive alcohol consumption

Diet – eg. reduction of salt

Caffeine reduction

Increase motivation to exercise

There are also what are know as “fixed risks”. These are factors that contribute to higher blood pressure but are beyond your control. These can include:

Ethnic origin. Those from a Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi backgrounds, among others, are at increased risk.

Being male.

Early onset of menopause in women.

A strong family history.

Age. The older you get the more likely you will have high blood pressure.

What can you do to tackle high blood pressure?

If you go to the doctors and they diagnose you with essential hypertension it is likely that they will prescribe medication to help manage your hypertension. The problem these medications, if started, have to be taken for the rest of your life. In many cases two or three different medications have to be taken to control the symptoms.

With these medications come the potential of side effects and with more medications comes the chance of more side effects. This means that many people are reluctant to go down the medication route.

The other alternative to medication for hypertension is hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy is:

Drug free

Often very effective

No side effects

Can be tailored to your specific needs

To discuss how hypnotherapy could help you reduce your blood pressure call Focused Hypnosis on 0114 383 0123.

Trying to work out your BMI (body mass index) and then figure out of the number you get is ‘good’ or not is a faff for a lot of people. If you want things to be taken on board and used in the way they were intended it is often best if there can be as few stages as possible and that those stages are simple and straight forward.

BMI calculations and interpretation is not that straight forward for many people.

A better alternative has been found though. Simply take your height and divide it in half to discover what your maximum waist measurement should be.

This means that someone who is 5 foot 10 inches tall (70 inches) should have a maximum waist measurement of 35 inches. Simple.

It has also been found that this simple ratio is a better predictor of risk than using BMI. The ratio was a better predictor for things like high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks and strokes.

Many people are able to do the calculation in their head as most people know their height and their waist size.

If your waist size is greater that half of your height and you would like some help in doing something about it call Focused Hypnosis today on 0114 383 0123

It’s nearly summer and for some, a time to get back to healthy eating and maybe lose some weight for a holiday. But, staying motivated and on track can be difficult. So here are my top tips for staying motivated and on track with healthy eating:

Set achievable goals. Aiming to eat 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day if you eat none now is not very realistic. Start by aiming to drink a glass of fruit juice or eat a banana every day and build up from there.

Make sure you are full committed to a change of lifestyle. If you are not going to give it 110%, it can be very difficult to stay motivated and not give in to temptation. View it as a long term lifestyle choice not a quick fix to losing weight

Plan your meals. Knowing what you are going to eat helps with shopping and prevents grazing on food instead of eating a proper meal because you don’t know what to have or don’t really have anything in.

Don’t buy the foods you are tempted by. Stock up on healthy snacks such as fruit, dried fruit and nuts and prepare vegetable sticks. When you open the fridge for something to munch, you’ll reach for those rather than the junk.

Write down what you eat. Keeping a food diary is a great way of seeing how much you eat. It can be quite surprising. Be honest with yourself and write down everything you eat and drink at the time of consumption.

Limit alcohol. In some people, alcohol causes food cravings and it’s normally for crisps or nuts not fruit and veg! If you are drinking and eating, alcohol can also affect your judgement on how much you have eaten causing you to eat more than you may need to.

Avoid diet fizzy drinks such as Diet Coke as they have been suggested to cause sugar cravings. Your body expects sugar but isn’t given it leading you to crave it more.

Eat 3 meals a day. Skipping meals leads to snacking and generally over consumption of food. Try to snack on fruit, vegetables and unsalted nuts in between meals if you need a snack

Drink lots of water. It’s recommended at least 6-8 glasses a day. Sometimes, we mistake hunger for thirst so have a glass of water before you have something to eat.

Enlist the help of someone else maybe your partner or another family member who will help you stay on track and be there when you are struggling to keep motivated. Or, get the help of a professional who will keep you motivated with weekly phone calls or email support.

Low carb, low fat, Dukan, South Beach or the diet of the moment? What is a body to do? While each approach may have something to teach us, it is clear that nothing is clear when it comes to weight loss.

I believe that when scientists and diet gurus finally find the “magic diet”, it will be what we’ve known all along …the most effective way to lose weight is to eat less chemically processed foods, eat more foods provided as nature intended and of course exercise more.

There Is No Magic Weight Loss Pill

There are no magic pills that magically take off weight while you sleep. There is no-one and nothing else responsible for your weight and health other than you.

The ‘Diet Mentality’ is the part of your brain that sees things in black and white terms. You are either on or off a diet. You are either good or bad depending on your weight or how well you are sticking to your diet. And foods are either good or bad as well.

You become disgusted with yourself when you go “off” your diet or eat a “bad” food. When this happens you decide that you have broken the diet anyway, so you may as well eat anything that you like. And then you feel even worse, driven into a cycle of unrealistic expectations, broken promises and failure.

Not healthy!

The Alternative To The Diet Mentality

The alternative to the Diet Mentality is the conscious creation of a healthy relationship with food. It means that you no longer see things as black and white, good and bad. It means that you commit to make attitudinal and behavioural changes that support creating the new you.

The first step in changing your attitude in order to achieve long-term success is to “make friends with food”. It means that you understand that food is nourishment and necessary for survival. It requires acknowledging that it is okay to ENJOY preparing and eating food.

Awareness Of Choice Makes A Difference

It means empowerment. It means recognising that your relationship with food is a series of CHOICES that can lead you to the outcome you desire. It means that you can give up short-term satisfaction in order to obtain long-term goals.

This is helped by following the second step, allowing yourself some flexibility with the 70/30 rule. It is IMPOSSIBLE to set yourself unrealistic, rigid rules to follow for life. You need a social life, attend weddings and dinners and not feel deprived with food and drink.

Not inflict your ‘rigid’ views on your diet on your hosts. So make your personal choices around food for 70% of the time, allowing yourself the flexibility to eat as well as you can in any social situation 30% of the time. And if you can do 80/20, even better!

This is the ‘Freedom from Diet Mentality’. How much better do you feel now? Now there is a lot less stress around what you put into your mouth.

A therapist who specialises in weight issues can be very helpful in assisting you to identify ineffective thoughts, behaviours and habits and create positive strategies for motivation and change, so get help if you need it.

Think Slim!

The research was done in Taiwan and the big findings of the study shows smokers are 55% more likely to quit smoking if they exercise and 43% less likely to relapse as a result of exercise. The study looked at nearly 430,000 people who quit smoking.

Dr. C.P. Wen, one of the researchers, explains: “Exercise can help smokers to quit and quitting smoking has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of developing cardio-vascular disease and that must be the goal of all smokers.

If smokers can continue to exercise, not only they can increase the quit rate, but also they can reduce their mortality for all cause and for cardio-vascular disease in the long run.”

If you did just 15 minutes exercise each day you have the huge increase in the chances of stopping smoking and staying stopped.

“Our message is to quit and exercise — to do both is the best,” says Chi Pang Wen, a professor at the National Health Research Institute and China Medical University Hospital in Taiwan, who presented the data at the World Congress of Cardiology meeting in Dubai.

Quitting Smoking Does NOT Have To Be Painful

This research is great news for people wanting to quit smoking but unfortunately even highly trained people who research the field of quitting smoking still reel out the accepted (but incorrect) wisdom. Professor Wen said “Trying to quit is a painful process. That painful process creates a vacuum. This substitute, which is exercise, will distract the smokers from thinking every day about the need to smoke.”

I would beg to differ on the psychology behind why exercise helps people quit smoking. Smoking is NOT hard to quit with the right mindset. I and many other people I know were able to stop immediately and with no side effects/cravings/withdrawal because we had the right mindset. Exercise will help develop and strengthen that mindset.

People who used to smoke and then stopped and then stay stopped rarely succeed by substituting smoking for something else. The long term winners just stop and are so glad that they have stopped they just get on with their life. If you had toothache for weeks and weeks and then finally got the tooth fixed and the pain went away would you try and find a different way to inflict pain on yourself or would you just get on with your life?

There’s Great News For People Who Don’t Quit Smoking Too

If you continue to smoke, for whatever reason, then the 15 minutes of exercise a day will help increase your life expectancy too. The exercise doesn’t even have to be difficult. A 15 minute walk counts as exercise. This can increase the life expectancy of smokers according to a previous study done by Professor Wen which was published in The Lancet.

By doing 30 minutes of exercise a day life expectancy can be increased by nearly four years in people who continue to smoke. This improvement is comparable to ex-smokers who do little or no exercise.

Ex-smokers who do 30 minutes of exercise a day can increase their life expectancy by just over five and a half years and reduce their risk of death by 43% and this level of health is comparable to non-smokers who are inactive.

Professor Wen encourages everyone to exercise but especially smokers.”We want smokers to do as much exercise as possible”

Clinical hypnotherapy is being used by Jeanne Safer, a psychologist in New York, to help her cope with the chemotherapy she is receiving for her rare but curable leukaemia. On her way to one of her chemo sessions she hypnotises herself in the back of a taxi. She puts herself into a light hypnotic trance and reminds herself of the benefits of the treatment and tells herself that she won’t fight the process.

Jeanne began being sceptical about hypnotherapy and its benefits but discovered that it realy helped her get through biopsies, surgical procedures and MRI scans. After experiencing the benefits of hypnosis for herself Jeanne now uses hypnotherapy with her patients.

Clinical Hypnotherapy Is Starting To Be Understood

Hypnosis has long been misunderstood but as advances in medicine progress the intricacies of hypnotherapy and becoming more recognised allowing clinical hypnotherapy to help people have a better experience. Hypnosis definitely does have an impact as numerous studies have proved. Sometimes though it is not possible to say how it works but it is undeniable that in some circumstances it definitely does work.

Hypnosis is now being used a lot more in hospitals as it becomes more widely recognised that it can reduce a patient’s stress levels which reduces the possibility of complications, it speeds recovery time and minimizes pain. All of which provide a better experience for the patient and reduces the cost to the hospital.

Studies From USA Show Hypnosis Can Help To Manage Pain

Dr. David Spiegel, a psychiatrist and director of the Center for Health and Stress at Stanford University, has studied hypnosis for 40 years. He explains that ”We can teach people how to manage pain and anxiety. There’s been this mistake in medicine that if you have a certain amount of tissue damage, you should feel this amount of pain. But many things can alter how much pain you feel.”

The applications of clinical hypnotherapy are becoming better understood and more diversely applied. Currently there is strong evidence that hypnotherapy can be used to help IBS, reducing blood pressure, controlling asthma attacks easing migraines and so much more.

Hypnotherapy Is More Than A Stage Trick

These findings are not surprising to hypnotherapists like myself. The numerous studies that are always coming out show just how effective clinical hypnotherapy can be but this still surprises many medical professionals who seem to have their opinion tainted by stage hypnosis. This leads many health professionals to think of hypnosis in terms of entertainment value rather than therapeutic benefit.

“Hypnosis is like a good kid with a bad reputation” said Dr. Guy Montgomery, director of the Integrative Behavioural Medicine program at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. “It’s not mind control. We can’t make somebody rob a bank,” he says.

I would disagree with this claim about bank robbing as Derren Brown has shown that perhaps the accepted and traditional view of what hypnosis is and is not capable of may need revising.

Check out these videos from Derren Brown: The Heist and The Assassin which show what could be possible using the power of hypnosis. You might also want to check out my blog post on Derren Brown and the implications of his TV shows

Clinical Hypnotherapy Is A Powerful Way To Change Your Mind

Clinical hypnotherapy does work and suggestions given in hypnosis can have a powerful effect on the mind which in turn can have an effect on the body.

A study by Stanford University in America found that when people were asked to imagine eating the secretions of gastric acid in their stomach increased by 70%. A study done by Harvard Medical School found that people who had fifteen minutes of hypnosis before surgery experienced less pain post surgery and their surgery took less time which is all better for the patient and costs less for the hospital.

Clinical Hypnosis Is Strongly Linked To Physiology

“There is a strong link to physiology—and it’s getting stronger, the more research is being done,” said Tanya Edwards, director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic.

As a result of MSI scans it has been revealed that clinical hypnotherapy does not reduce pain receptors’ output but it does reflect attention and allows the person to be less engaged in the experience of pain. The benefits of clinical hypnotherapy can be experienced by anyone in theory as we are all capable of going into trance but some people actively resist the process of being hypnotised.

How To Find A Professional Clinical Hypnotherapist

Finding a professional and competent hypnotherapist can be a bit of a chalenge in some areas of the country. There are no laws that require a minimum level of ability or experience in order to practice hypnotherapy. This has lead to some unscrupulous people setting up as hypnotherapists despite having very minimal knowledge of the profession and how to use the techniques.

Because of this I have written a guide called “10 things you must know before getting hypnotherapy“. This is designed to help you find a therapist who is capable and competent. It can be downloaded by clicking the “freebies” button at the top of this page.

Hypnotherapy Reviews Are Essential

It is also advisable to look for hypnotherapy reviews of the practitioners you are considering approaching.

If you would like any further help in finding a reputable therapist please feel free to contact me directly by emailing richard@sheffield-hypnosis.co.uk

A Sydney resident weighs 300kg/47 stones and is looking to lose weight and so has turned to hypnosis to assist him in his attempt. Jordan Tirekidis is 44 years old and is looking at a very early death unless he can make some drastic lifestyle changes. He says that his problems with food began when he was 9 years old and had his tonsils removed.

In the time after this operation he was given sweet and sugary foods to eat and since then he hasn’t stopped. On an average day he can eat : 10 hash browns with coffee for breakfast. Two big Macs with chips for lunch and tea is 4 Whopper burgers. Snacks between meals are usually cakes and buns and all this washed down with a litre of coke a day.

“Addicted” To Unhealthy Food

Obviously Jordan’s huge weight causes all sorts of problems for him. His clothes size is 12XL and his clothes have to be custom made for him. Jordan is also incapable of standing on his own two feet for more than a few minutes because his weight is simply too much for his legs to handle. Jordan says he is “addicted” to sweet and unhealthy food is getting hypnotherapy to help him make the changes that could save his life.

While the details don’t mention Jordan’s blood pressure it is almost inevitable that his blood pressure is way too high which will put him at a hugely increased risk of a heart attack or stroke as a direct result of his weight.

“I have to do something about it because it’s getting to me and I didn’t want to die sitting in a chair,” Mr Tirekidis said.

Hypnotherapy For Weight Loss

Jordan is working with Sydney hypnotherapist Mark Stevens and a team of nutritionists and fitness experts in his attempt to lose 200kg/31 stones.

Mr. Stevens says “I’ll make sure Jordan never, ever, ever wants to touch a custard tart again.” This quote on one level sounds great because losing any weight will surely be good for Jordan but as a hypnotherapist myself I’m troubled by Mr. Stevens’ choice of language. I would never “make” someone hate something. It is a LOT more effective to assist people to make the changes that THEY want to make.

Empower Change Rather Than Demand It

My approach is all about empowering people to change, not forcing them to.

Mr Stephens uses an aversion approach to weight loss which encourages Jordan to associate his favourite foods with bad smells and foul images, such as a rubbish tip or dog droppings. While this may sound like it could be effective it often isn’t in the long-term. By taking a more positive and affirming approach it is possible to help people see their thoughts and actions in a different way and to associate positive things with the changes they desire.

By working this way I have helped many people to lose unwanted and unneeded weight and be happier and healthier.

Emotional Eating Is A Huge Issue

Jordan’s problems began, he says, when he had his tonsils removed. It is likely that this emotional event in Jordan’s young life was scary and worrying. The sweet food could have been seen as the answer to pain and discomfort and through that association and the pursuit of happiness it has led to Jordan eating far too much of some of the most unhealthy food available. This kind of emotional eating affects thousands of people.

Hypnotherapy could be a lot more effective for Jordan if his hypnotherapist focused on changing these associations so that he was still able to gain reassurance and comfort but from something that was healthier.

If you have unhealthy associations with food and would like to look at ways to lose weight then hypnotherapy could be the answer. For a free chat about hypnosis and how to lose weight call Focused Hypnosis today on 0114 383 0123

Google have had a change in privacy policy recently and now LinkedIn have updated theirs. The difference is that Google made a big deal about it and made it very clear it was happening. LinkedIn haven’t.

With these changes LinkedIn will be allowed to use the image associated with your profile and your name in any of their advertising. Some will see this as no problem and not care in the slightest. For others this will be seen as an infringement on their personal information. Whenever things like this happen I remind myself the use of platforms like LinkedIn is free (on the whole) because you are giving them your information and this is just a part of that deal already made.

If you want to opt out you can.

Follow these simple steps to get things back to how they were…

1. Sign into LinkedIn and then hover your mouse over over your name in the top right corner of the screen and click “settings”.

2. On the next page click “account” in the bottom left corner of the screen.

3. In the “account” box that opens click “Manage advertising preferences”.

4. Un-tick the box that says “LinkedIn may show me ads on third party websites”.

5. Click “save”.

While she’s often struggled in the past to stay committed to a diet and fitness regime, pals say the reality star is delighted not to have slipped back into bad habits.

Hypnotherapy Can Help You Make Healthier Choices

And Closer can reveal 5ft 4 Kerry has told friends her success is thanks to hypnotherapy sessions, which are helping her make healthy choices and keep her weight at around 8½st. A friend reveals: “She visited a hypnotist up in Cheshire and, since then, she seems to have found it really easy to stick to her healthy eating and exercise plan. She’s bouncing out of bed early to go for a jog, going to the gym and choosing healthy snacks.

“I’m Off Junk Food”

“Kerry says she’s gone right off all the junk food she usually loves and says keeping the weight off has left her feeling better – and sexier – than ever.” The mum-of-four is well known for her yo-yoing size – after liposuction took her from a size 14 to an 8 in 2008, Kerry shrank to a 6 in 2009. But her diet of Bran Flakes, salad and protein shakes proved unsustainable and, within months, she’d regained the weight, going up to a size 14.

Increase Your Pride In Yourself By Changing Your Diet

In 2010, Kerry confessed life with her second husband, former cabbie Mark Croft, 41, contributed to her poor diet, saying: “With Mark, I used to eat loads of curries and takeaways. I had no pride in myself and I didn’t give a sh*t, so I ate anything.” Kerry, 31, credits Closer for turning her life around and helping her ditch drugs and her destructive relationship with Mark after we sent her for a stint at a bootcamp in 2010.

But she gained weight in the Celebrity Big Brother house in 2011 and returned to bootcamp with Closer this January, where she dropped from 10st 4lbs and a size 10-12 to 9st 4lbs and an 8-10. But, despite slimming down, Kerry admitted at the time: “My weakness is when I go out for dinner with my kids. I’ll order a chicken salad, but I can’t help but pick at the kids’ leftover chips!”

But by the end of February, Kerry – who’s battled booze and drug problems in the past – was a slim and toned size 8-10 and weighed 8st as a result of daily five-mile runs and two-hour workouts with a personal trainer. Now sources say since having two, two hour-long hypnotherapy sessions, Kerry – who’s had a breast reduction and breast lift in the past – is finding it easier to maintain her healthy lifestyle.

Weight-loss hypnotherapy involves implanting subconscious messages to remind you to stop eating when you feel full. It also helps you visualise healthy activities, such as working out in the gym, as a feel-good experience. A source says: “She’s planning two more sessions. It’s specifically to stop her eating junk, so the hypnotist has been highlighting the bad effects of fat and how it can clog arteries and ruin her skin and is encouraging her to eat fruit and veg instead.

Control Your Desires In A Powerfully Natural Way With Hypnotherapy

“It’s curbed her appetite, but the hypnotist is also emphasising the importance of exercise. Before, Kerry grudgingly accepted she had to do it to stay in shape, but now she’s throwing herself into it with gusto. “Normally, when she goes to her mum Sue’s house, she has a curry or McDonald’s, but now she says she feels repulsed by the thought of eating McDonald’s and visualises the fat it contains – she’d rather eat carrots and houmous or fruit.”

The source adds: “She’s barely touching booze either and has been training every day. All her friends are amazed.” Pictured at the Royal Meridien Hotel in Dubai last week, the star was clearly loved-up with “soulmate” Steve, 34, whom she started dating in October. She’s made no secret recently of her desire to get married again and pals describe Kerry – mum to Molly, 10, Lilly-Sue, nine, Heidi, five, and son Max, three – as “blissfully happy.”

Cut Out The Junk Food, Feel Better

Part-time artist Steve moved into her Surrey home last month and the pair constantly exchange gushing messages on Twitter, with Kerry writing last week: “@SteveAlce you’ve changed my world I love you.”

Though she recently denied they were engaged, she said last week: “I would marry Steve in a heartbeat if he ever asked me and I actually asked him twice to marry me on 29 February. But he didn’t respond and instead just made a joke of it, even though I was being sincere. I’m also very old-fashioned – I think it’s wrong for a woman to ask, but he’s missed his chance now, anyway!”

And she’s told pals the sunshine break has “cemented” their love and she’s confident he’ll propose soon. A source says: “For the last few weeks, all they’ve done is fawn over each other when they’re together and Tweet and text when they’re apart. “Steve is as smitten with her as she is with him and she is in no doubt she will have a ring on her finger soon. She couldn’t be happier and keeps saying she has to pinch herself to check it’s real.”

Currently thought to be meeting with her former Atomic Kitten bandmates to discuss their upcoming reunion, pals say Kerry is also focusing on a TV show about bootcamp – and helping other women benefit from it. An insider says: “A camera crew will follow them while Kerry helps them get fit and tackle their problems. She can’t wait to get stuck in. She’s never looked back since her own experience prompted her to finally leave Mark. “She’s just hoping she can keep her new body.” By Amy Swales

Richard was very welcoming and friendly and put me at ease straight away. After my first session I saw a noticeable improvement in how I was feeling and felt much more relaxed. Richard taught me self-hypnosis techniques and gave me a recording of the session to use at home, which were both great and reinforced the improvements.

It only took two sessions in total and I now feel I can manage my phobia and the improvement to my quality of life has been unbelievable! I would recommend Sheffield hypnosis to anyone!”

I am all about helping as many people as possible to find the most appropriate solution to their difficulties. I would rather that you get the best person to help you rather than take you on as a client knowing that there is someone better out there that you should be seeing.

I occasionally get enquiries from people who are interested in getting my help but the only thing stopping them is the prices I charge. For people on limited incomes I do offer a reduced rate but even this is not low enough for some people. If you are looking for super discounted hypnosis in Sheffield there is an offer on LivingSocial that you need to know about. Here is the link Cheap Hypnotherapy In Sheffield

The offer is one session of hypnosis for £29 or 3 sessions for £79. This includes a free 30 minute consultation.

I am not going to get any kind of kickback or reward for you buying through this link as I am not an affiliate marketer of LivingSocial so you may be wondering why in the hell I am promoting a competitor.

Well they aren’t really a competitor.

Helping You To Find The Most Appropriate Hypnotherapist

Yes they are a hypnotherapist and they are in Sheffield but that is where the similarities end. I am not writing this post to bad mouth a fellow professional because that is not what I do. I am sure Andrew who runs Hypnotherapyexpert is very good at what he does. What I am doing is providing a compare and contrast service to help you find the most appropriate solution to your issue.

If you buy through the LivingSocial link you will be buying from www.hypnotherapyexpert dot co dot uk (you will see why I spelled the address this way in a moment.) I followed this link but the site was blocked because 4 elements of the site were seen as containing a virus by my security software.

If the cost of hypnotherapy is the main factor in deciding who you see then you aren’t looking for me and you should probably visit someone else. If you are looking for a quality service then I could be the right hypnotherapist for you.

Why Focused Hypnosis Is Different

I don’t limit the amount of time I consult with a client. 30 minutes is not long enough for me to find the level of detail I need to ensure that I understand your situation and your goals. usually an initial consultation lasts for around an hour to an hour and a half rather than 30 minutes.

I have invested heavily in my business over the last four years and have developed a style of treatment that has benefitted many people as my testimonials prove. Because of this level of investment I can’t and won’t charge rock bottom prices. In many industries you get what you pay for. Sometimes that is true for hypnosis but sometimes not. That is why I am as transparent as possible in everything I do.

Satisfaction Guaranteed Hypnotherapy

To this end I offer a satisfaction guarantee. this covers the environment I work in and my conduct. I don’t guarantee the outcome of hypnosis as I believe this would be unethical. This guarantee means that if after the consultation you decide you don’t want to work with me the consultation is free of charge and I will work with you to find another therapist who will better meet your needs. To date I have never had anyone have to use this guarantee but I have been told it has been reassuring to some clients to know it is there.

This guarantee also extends to the first treatment session. If you really don’t like hypnosis for whatever reason and don’t want to continue tell me and the treatment is cancelled and there is no charge for that session.

I would rather you find the most appropriate service rather than you feel obligated to continue and not enjoy the process.

I offer a free recording of each treatment session on a large capacity USB flashdrive because I feel that it can be helpful to be able to listen back to the session. Many clients have told me that this has helped them and I want everyone I see to have the best chance of success so I include this as standard rather than as an optional extra.

So in summary, I am NOT the cheapest but I do strive to be the best in everything I do.

Review: “I visited Richard regarding issues of stress, worry and jealousy. After three sessions my life has a lot more of a positive attitude about it, I don’t worry about things like I used to and I feel more happier with my life. I found Richard very understanding and helpful with my problems and each session was really helpful.

I chose to also have a recording of the sessions so I could listen to these in the future. I would recommend Focused Hypnosis to anyone no matter how big or small they think their problem is. It was money well spent and I’m really pleased I did it!!!”

This is one of those questions that I get asked over and over so I thought a page about it on my website would help.

If you are short of time the quick answer is “yes, hypnotherapy does work” but there is a ‘but’. Let me explain.

Hypnosis is a state of mind that we are all capable of achieving. In fact the vast majority of us do it several times a day without even realising it. Have you ever had a daydream? Has time ever passed surprisingly quickly whilst you were doing something you enjoy? Have you ever driven a car and gone onto ‘automatic pilot’ and found yourself unsure of the journey you just made? If the answer is yes to any of those questions then you were in a trance.

It is a 100% natural process. You can drift into a trance, stay there for a split second through to hours and then come out the other side effortlessly easily.

So a trance state of mind is something that we are all biologically and psychologically capable of achieving. That state of mind can happen on its own or we can induce that frame of mind deliberately. In our past this hypnotic frame of mind was induced through staring into a fire or listening to drums. These days many people frequently achieve this hypnotic frame of mind through things like yoga and meditation. The process of being capable of going into a trance or an altered frame of mind is proven to happen. That is beyond doubt. Something happens but there is some debate about about if this ability is what is being tapped into through hypnosis.

Is Hypnotherapy Just Play Acting?

Some people firmly believe that no-one is ever hypnotised, that they are just pretending or playing a long. This is certainly one of the possible explanations of hypnosis and how it works. If people are playing along they are accepting the process and they are using their imagination to go with the suggestions that are being made to them. As they are doing this they may be imagining themselves as a non-smoker for example. Maybe they imagine themselves hating smoking and never wanting to do it again. Once the trance is brought to an end that experience of playing a long can stay with the person. If they enjoyed seeing themselves as a no-smoker then there is the chance that they will prefer this to smoking and as a result quit smoking.

Did hypnosis ‘make’ them stop? No. They experienced the alternative in their imagination and the imagination is a very powerful tool. It is possible that through experiencing the alternative ways of being that they could become more appealing as a result and lead to behaviour modification.

Is Hypnotherapy An Altered State Of Consciousness?

Through brain scans of people who have been put into a trance something very definitely happens to how we think while being hypnotised. Research from Hull University has shown this.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8359170.stm Study leader Dr William McGeown, a lecturer in the department of psychology, said “This shows that the changes were due to hypnosis and not just simple relaxation. Our study shows hypnosis is real.”

In this changed state of mind it is possible that the unconscious mind can be influenced through the power of suggestion, imagery, metaphors and the like and that this can then lead to alternative choices which could result in behaviour modification.

So DOES Hypnotherapy Work?

The answer is yes…and no. Some people undoubtedly have an experience during a hypnotic session which results in them able to change aspects of their thoughts and behaviour which they have been unable to change any other way despite years or even decades of trying the other approaches. Some people have a hypnotic experience but the change they desire does not materialise. There may be many reasons for the changes not happening but that is another post.

In my experience (which is unrepresentative) I have never had anyone unable to enter into a trance while working with me. Of those people the large majority have noticed some changes in how they think, act or feel. Those changes may be exactly what was desired. Sometime it may be only partial change. Sometime, in a minority of cases, there is no change at all. I do always work very hard to ensure as far as I am able to do so that every person I work with has the exact degree of change that they desire.

I had about 5 sessions with richard and i felt so relaxed in talking to him about my downfalls when it came to eating. I started the sessions in october 2011 and I am delighted to say I have lost 2 stone and its been so easy I have just learned that there is no restriction on any thing that i want to eat but its better to take the healthy option.

I now eat fresh fruit , plan my meals daily, so I don’t start bitting on junk food in-between and if I do feel hungry i always have a good stock of fruit or healthy options to nibble on. I went as a last resort to see richard as I was going on a cruise with my husband in march and the thought of me in a costume frightened me. Now my case is full of lovely clothes and I cant wait !!!!! Thank you so much richard and I definitely will be recommending you to all my friends.”

Entirely mental, panic attacks feel like a physical problem, and when they’re triggered, they can send the mind into a cloudy panic that some describe as “feeling like you are dying.”

Suffering from panic attacks can seriously affect your life, and those that do experience panic attacks regularly often become more separated from the world and consistently concerned about their own health. But treatment for panic attacks is surprisingly lacking.

One of the main reasons is because they are so poorly understood. Doctors treat panic attacks as though they are a physical health issue, prescribing medicines for the heart and lungs that ultimately affect neither. Psychologists tend to treat panic attacks with tranquilizers and anti-anxiety medications.

While this makes some sense (panic attacks are often triggered by anxiety), they are far too strong – and far too dangerous – choice for those suffering from an issue that needs to be controlled mentally. In addition, once you get off of these drugs, the panic attacks can often come back.

Searching for a Safe Solution

Panic attacks are too disruptive to ignore, but the traditional methods of treating them can be too dangerous for many people to consider their use. The solution is to find a safe and effective method of combatting the panic attacks and anxiety in a way that will be free of side effects. Hypnotherapy is such a way, providing many benefits that you simply do not get from traditional treatments including:

Safety

Hypnotherapy is a completely safe process. It doesn’t involve any drugs or chemicals. It involves altering belief in a way that doesn’t have any long term consequences while still providing clear benefits. It’s also less labour intensive than other types of therapy and doesn’t need to be complimented with any medicines or supplements.

While medicine has generally taught the need to deal directly with oral drugs, panic attacks are by far one of the worst mental health issues to depend on these drugs. Searching for an alternative solution is important, which is why hypnotherapy works so well. Overall, it is a much better choice than the dangerous and ineffective drugs that otherwise swarm the market.

Targets Key Thought Patterns

Hypnotherapy is a style of therapy that is designed to affect thoughts and beliefs. This is perfect as a potential cure for the way that panic attacks are trigged. Panic attacks are very often due to faulty thinking and an over-concern about health or the current status of personal problems. Drugs target the symptoms, but the thoughts are still there, and the moment you get off of the drugs your personal sensitivity will come back. Panic attacks are also self-triggering.

If you believe you might get one, you will, because the mind pays too close attention to any and all of your emotions. Hypnotherapy is a much better tool, then, because it is able to reduce the mind’s focus on these symptoms, allowing you to mentally relax and reduce the negative thoughts. Overall, this strategy makes more sense for panic attack symptoms, making it more effective.

Personal Contact

Hypnotherapy also puts you in contact with a human being. Social support is an important part of overcoming panic attacks and anxiety, so placing you in contact with a qualified hypnotherapist has secondary benefits in addition to the primary benefits. Furthermore, a hypnosis expert that understands panic attacks and anxiety can also help you with many of the issues that may have lead up to your panic attack. If you’re dealing with intense anxiety and work or at home, or you had a health concern in the past that caused you to become oversensitive to the feelings you get in your body, these can be addressed through additional hypnotherapy techniques.

Using Safe and Effective Treatment Methods

Lifestyle changes and understanding panic attacks are an important part of living with them, as the medical community has often treated panic attacks incorrectly, leading to a misunderstanding about their cause and effect. But even with those changes, panic attacks often struggle to go away on their own. Worry about experiencing a panic attack is likely to cause them.

They need some type of direct intervention that can teach you to change your mindset and adjust your thought patterns in order to improve the long term outlook of your anxiety and panic. That is one of the strengths of the hypnosis method. Qualified hypnotherapists can delve directly into those mindsets and change fault thought patterns in order to ensure that you are not focusing on the negative during the day.

Over time, your focus will no longer be on the potential for panic attacks, and your panic attacks are less likely to be triggered. That makes hypnotherapy an ideal option for reducing panic attacks and symptoms. About the Author: Ryan Rivera was recommended countless medicinal interventions for panic attacks before he discovered better solutions that he shares at www.calmclinic.com.

Review: “I found Richard online and was eager to find a professionally qualified hypnotherapist. His website gave me all the information regarding his services and MOST importantly his professional qualifications and affiliations. After my free phone conversation with Richard I attended for an initial consultation where we discussed my needs and problems.

I wanted additional confidence in the work place and for my hobby of singing and performing at the Lyceum. I have now finished my last session (of 3) and feel a great improvement. After the 1st session I had an audition and instead of being petrified I sailed through and got the part I wanted.

At work I have been able to perform a disciplinary procedure without doubting my ability or authority and I perform better under stressful conditions. I even found the deep relaxation helped a very painful back spasm!! All in all a winner.

Richard is thoroughly professional and adapts his technique and mannerisms to match the needs of his patients. If you’re a sceptic hypnotherapy may seem a bit “far out” when compared to traditional science and healthcare but it definitely works and proves that it really is mind over matter.”

I chose Focused Hypnosis because they seemed different to other hypnotherapists. Richard explained during my free 30 minute consultation that he treats smoking the same way he treats all other issues and he charges the same price too. Some hypnotherapists I looked at charge £300 for 1 hour!!

Richard explained that multiple sessions were likely to offer a much more long-term solution unlike these one or two-hour ‘intensive’ sessions. I saw Richard 4 times over a few weeks and by the end of the last session I felt so calm and happy about being a non smoker I couldn’t wait to get on with my new life!

Richard made me feel very relaxed and at easy and was very confident but considerate in how he worked. I found the whole process very enjoyable and have booked in with Richard for hypnotherapy to try and lose some weight. I would highly recommend Focused Hypnosis to anyone in Sheffield.”

Getting help through the doctors was a lengthy and slow process, that’s when I decided to try hypnotherapy. I found Focused Hypnosis on a forum and came highly recommended.

Richard thoroughly explained the process and immediately put me at ease. I was amazed at the dramatic results, my anxiety levels are significantly lower and the skills introduced to me in the session will help me in controlling my anxiety should it arise.

I am so impressed with the results and so grateful to have my life back. I would recommend hypnosis to anyone suffering with anxiety or panic attacks and would highly recommend Richard.”

I was feeling I had reached a complete barrier in communication with someone in my life and it felt I was unable to continue.

I was sceptical at first but after our informal chat I was pleased with how easy it was to talk about deep, personal issues and the understanding I got from Richard. At the first session I was made to feel totally relaxed and the session felt like 20 mins even though it was just over an hour.

There was an immediate difference in how I approached and felt about the matter I had. I also appreciated the recording of the session to listen to at my own leisure and I was tought techniques that I can use at home.

I’ve had two sessions to date and I believe the issues I have will be fully resolved after a few more. It is not expensive and because you can actually ‘feel’ the results, I believe it’s money well spent. I would highly recommend Richard and wish him the best of luck for the future. ”
